There are now six classes of membership: Active, Resident, Retired, Affiliate, Member of Distinguished Service and Medical Students.
Active Member A physician, either an M.D. or a D.O., who is engaged in the practice of anesthesiology,shall be eligible for Active Membership if all of the following apply:
He/she is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists; • His/her location of principal professional activity is in the State of New Mexico; • He/she is licensed by the New Mexico State Medical Board to practice medicine or osteopathic medicine in the State of New Mexico. • He/she will have successfully completed a training program in anesthesiology, accredited by ACGME or equivalent organizations, or the American Osteopathic Association. Resident Member A physician, in full time training in an internship or residency in anesthesiology in a program that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or The American Osteopathic Association, who maintains membership in the American Society of Anesthesiologists shall be eligible to become a Resident member. Retired Member A physician who has been an active member in good standing of this Society for a period of at least ten (10) years and who has retired from the practice of anesthesiology, or who is disabled and unable to engage in the practice of anesthesiology for one year or more, shall be eligible to become a Retired member.Affiliate Member (includes the following categories): • A physician who is not in the clinical practice of anesthesiology • A scientist who, while not engaged in administering clinical anesthesia to humans, is, nevertheless, interested in anesthesiology • A physician who is in the service of the United States government (other than in the employment of the Veterans' Administration) • At the option of the Board of Directors of the Society, a physician employed by the Veterans' Administration. • A physician who resides outside of the United States and is not a member of any other Component Society. Medical Student A student who is enrolled in an accredited New Mexico college/university medical degree program, who maintains membership in the American Society of Anesthesiologists shall become eligible to become a Medical Student member. Application for Membership All applications for Active, Resident, Retired, Affiliate and Medical Student memberships shall be made on the ASA membership form and the requisite portion for component societies should be completed. This form may be found under the Join the NMSA link. The application form shall contain an agreement by the applicant to support and abide by the Articles and Bylaws of the Society and shall otherwise be as prescribed by the Secretary/Treasurer. This form shall be updated and amended as necessary by the Secretary/Treasurer and the changes shall be subject to approval by the Board of Directors. An application for a Retired membership shall state the facts by which the applicant is eligible for such membership and shall be filed with the Secretary/Treasurer of the Society. An applicant shall be enrolled as a member upon completion of membership requirements and upon payment of the appropriate membership dues. Privileges of Membership Active Members and Members of Distinguished Service: Active and Members of Distinguished Service shall be entitled to vote and to exercise all of the privileges of membership in the Society. Resident, Retired, Affiliate Members and Medical Students: These members shall be entitled to attend meetings and participate in all of the functions of the Society including membership on committees. Except under unusual circumstances approved by the Board of Directors, they shall not serve as officers, delegates or other officials of the Society. They shall not be entitled to vote at meetings of the Society except at meetings of committees on which they may serve.
